The article asks what happens to autonomous judgment when knowledge is socially distributed and people depend on specialized knowledge. The study aims to clarify the nature of the subject’s autonomy under conditions of epistemic asymmetry between expert and layperson and to trace the relationship between epistemic dependence, trust and responsibility. Methodologically, the study relies on theoretical analysis and conceptual reconstruction of the provisions of classical and modern social theory, social epistemology and the philosophy of autonomy. The article focuses on processes of differentiation and specialization in social knowledge, social organization of expertise, professional forms of competence, conditions of trust in expert knowledge and limits of professional authority. It is shown that epistemic dependence in modern society is not an accidental consequence of a lack of information, but the result of a social distribution of activities and competences. Expertise is considered as a socially organized form of competence formed within specialized practices, professional communities and institutional procedures. Epistemic asymmetry refers here not only to the dependence on an expert answer or cognitive procedure, but also to the formation of the very space of judgment: what counts as relevant, which alternatives are available, and what criteria are used for evaluation. Dependence on someone else’s knowledge can be compatible with autonomy, provided that the subject retains intellectual self-direction, a role in decision-making, and responsibility for the action. Delegation of cognitive work does not mean full delegation of judgment or responsibility. This also changes how autonomous judgment should be understood. A person may rely on expert knowledge and still decide what to do and remain responsible for the decision. This is where questions of autonomy, expertise, trust and responsibility meet. The common ground is socially organized epistemic dependence. The main point is that autonomy need not mean independence from other people’s knowledge. It can instead involve managing one’s own epistemic dependence— knowing when to rely on others while still deciding what to do oneself. This issue comes up whenever experts and non-experts have to work with each other—in medicine, law, education, public administration, and public communication. The perspective developed in the article can therefore be used to examine situations in which decisions depend on specialized knowledge but cannot be fully delegated to those who possess it. Further research could focus on institutional conditions of trust in expert knowledge, mechanisms for distributing responsibility and ways to reduce the subject's epistemic burden without depriving him of an autonomous role in decision-making.uk_UA
