The study touches upon the peculiarities of writing abstracts for foreign journals, taking into account rapid language modification processes. The purpose of the study is to determine the main trends of modern European scientific and academic discourse and characterize its formal and substantive features on the example of abstracts. The method of content analysis and comparative analysis was used in the research process, as well as typological approach to highlight the essential features of the phenomenon under investigation. The paper reveals the essence differentiates between the concepts of abstract and summary in English. The authors point out the functions abstracts to a scientific article perform as a kind of secondary communication. Abstracts to scientific articles of European journals are analyzed with a focus on form and content according to two criteria: compositional-structural and lexical-grammatical. Abstracts of the latest articles (2020–2022) from leading European magazines of various scientific fields, such as Design, Computer Engineering, Economics, Accounting, Humanities, Business Administration, etc., serve as research material. (for example, Computer-Aided Design, Computers & Industrial Engineering, International Journal of Production Economics, International Business and Management, etc.), which enables us to draw generalized conclusions about modern European trends. The compositional structure of the modern abstract to European publications is highlighted. The most frequent clichés to reveal structural elements are singled out. Changes in the stylistic and lexical-grammatical content of the abstract are theoretically substantiated and practically illustrated. A new format of abstracts – graphic or visual – is described. The authors conclude that despite the tendency to deviate from the conservatism of the scientific sphere, the text of the academic discourse must meet the invariant requirements that the world scientific communities put forward for written scientific communication. Scientific and academic discourse is not a constant phenomenon, and therefore needs regular review and research.uk_UA
