The article presents a study of the evaluative semantic component inherent in names of medicinal plants in two genetically related languages: German and English. The authors have analysed phytonyms, the onomasiological structure of which contains a semantic component denoting tactile estimation, with the aim of providing a cognitive onomasiological reconstruction of motivators denoting positive or negative evaluation. Attributes of tactile perception have been studied to select those that are able to motivate names of medicinal plants with evaluative semantic component; also, the research has found out that positive and negative tactile estimation, that is found in the semantics of phytonyms, is based on the opposition “soft, gentle – pricking, scratchy”. The quantitative analysis showed that in terms of quantitative parameter negative estimation meanings overweight positive ones considerably. The cognitive onomasiological analysis proved that the motivators, inherent in the material under study, belong to two types – the modus type and the metaphoric type. The procedure of internal reconstruction revealed that the most productive motivators of tactile estimation in the languages under study are “dorn”, “stechen”, “distel” in German, and corresponding English lexemes “thorn”, “stick”, “thistle”, the origins of which can be traced back to Indo-European roots, the meaning of which is also related to negative tactile perceptions. Whereas German motivators retained their negative connotation in the process of historical semantic changes, the English verb “to stick” was deprived of initial negative association and possesses neutral connotation at present. Motivators belonging to the terminal associative type in both languages are expressed by names of objects that serve as a standard for a certain quality. The standard objects for negative tactile perceptions are artifacts, namely, sharp objects (prickers, stingers, horns). The standard objects for positive tactile objects are soft textiles or fabrics – flannel, wool, or velvet – with which smooth or soft plant leaves are comparable. Comparing results obtained in the two languages the authors observed major coincidences in the mechanisms of evolving of the evaluative semantics within the motivators of phytomyms rather than differences, which can be explained by the genetic affinity between the two languages.
