In modern conditions it is particularly important to prepare highly qualified accounting and tax specialists who must follow the established standards and at the same time promptly react to changes occurring in the legislation and in the country's economy as a whole. The main stages of the professional formation of an accountant are considered in the article such as the rise of professional intentions, the professional preparation, the process of entering into the profession, the complete realization of the personality into independent professional work, the super-professionalism. It is determined that the most important stage of the process of becoming an accountant is the stage of professional training which provides the formation of relevant knowledge, skills and special (professional) competences for the higher education applicants. The list of the competences for the training of accounting and tax specialists is set by the Higher Education Standards for the first (bachelor) and the second (master's) levels but it is not exhaustive that’s why higher education institutions may indicate additional competences when creating educational programs. It is proposed for users to broaden and to group the special (professional) competences with the purpose of its reflection in the educational and professional programs of the speciality “Accounting and taxation”: for the first (bachelor’s) educational level: accounting, control-auditing, analytical, organizational; for the second (master's) educational level: accounting, controlling, auditing, analytical, researching, prognostic, pedagogical. Separation of the group of pedagogical competences in the educational and professional program of the master's level of higher education is conditioned by the fact that the presence of the master's level of higher education gives the opportunity to be a teacher in higher educational institutions. The following competences are proposed to include to the pedagogical competences: the permission to teach accounting, control, analysis and audit disciplines; the ability to organize educational, pedagogic, research work; the ability to develop effective forms of pedagogical control; the ability to improve the learning process using modern information resources. Therefore, the formation of special (professional) competences in the process of higher education will provide qualitative professional training for future accounting and tax specialists
