The article analyzes the artistic features of horror literature. The prerequisites for the emergence of HORROR works, the main archetypes and the originality of the image of characters are revealed. It is established that horror literature originates in romanticism and has a significant religious background, namely Protestant one. This genre of literature grew out of English Romanticism, namely from the works of G. Byron , however, the real father of horror literature was E. Poe who not only successfully conveyed the feeling of horror and extravagance, but also the psychologism of the characters. Other representatives of this literary direction include A. Bierce, G. Lovecraft, S. King, B. Stoker. Notable features of horror fiction are the psychological depiction of a person's experience of the emotion of fear. Horror works have the appropriate stylistic organization and use typical archetypal characters, which include a place, i.e. a house, cemetery, dump, etc., the corresponding geography of events, usually Eastern Europe, a negative character, such as a disgusting creature, vampire, bizarre nature, ghost. The novel by B. Stoker "Dracula" is written in the epistolary genre and tells the story of events in a quaint castle in Transylvania. The prototypes of Count Dracula are considered to be the famous writer Oscar Wilde and Vlad Tepes, and the rest of the characters in the novel "Dracula" are fictional and their names have a corresponding stylistic load. An artistic concept represents the writer's idea of certain things and concepts that he represents in a work of art, offering his own interpretation. The concept of HORROR in the horror novel "Dracula" is represented by basic lexemes of fear, to be frightened, horror, dismay, abhorrence, fright, terror. In order to create an atmosphere of fear B. Stoker uses the descriptions of the area, natural phenomena, animal behavior, human appearance, their experiences and premonitions.
